A New Hymn for John 1:1

(Verse 1)
In the beginning was the Word,
Eternal, holy, and divine.
With God, He was, the scripture heard,
In Him, God’s glory did shine.

(Chorus)
The Word was God, in Him we trust,
In Him, creation found its birth.
Through Him, all things from dust to dust,
In Him, heaven meets the earth.

(Verse 2)
He was with God at the start,
A mystery deep and profound.
The Word, a light that won’t depart,
In Him, true life is found.

(Chorus)
The Word was God, the truth, the way,
In Him, the light breaks the night.
He guides us on, come what may,
In Him, we walk by faith, not sight.

(Bridge)
Through Him all things were made and stand,
His power none can comprehend.
In every age, in every land,
His love and grace know no end.

(Verse 3)
And the Word became flesh to dwell,
Among us, full of grace and truth.
In Him, God’s story to tell,
Eternal life for all, forsooth.

(Chorus)
The Word was God, our hope and peace,
In Him, redemption’s song we sing.
Through Him, our hearts find sweet release,
In Him, our Savior, Lord, and King.

(Outro)
In the beginning was the Word,
The Alpha and Omega’s call.
Forever shall His truth be heard,
The Word was God, in Him, our all.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

The verse above has me reflecting. It reinforces our charge to do good works. It reinforces God’s omnipotence. It reminds us that we have a purpose. God has work for us to do and it is good work.

I had been looking at Matthew 6:33 for a couple of weeks on my whiteboard. Specifically, I had written the King James version of the verse. It goes: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Today, I wanted to move from there to another verse. I kept coming to seek God and his word and his wisdom. I ended up doing a Google search for “seek first the kingdom of god” and Google suggested “seek first the kingdom of god luke”. I decided to follow the suggestion and that took me to Luke 12:31.

“… your Father knows you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.”

Luke 12:30-31 (NIV)

In this verse in Luke, Jesus is saying to seek God’s kingdom and “these things” will be given to you. What are “these things”? Specifically, in the NIV, we are told those things are food and drink. Pausing here, I wondered if this verse speaks literally to those two general items, or if we can stretch it further to include all things needed by humans. I tend to think that is reasonable to make the stretch, because earlier in 27 we were talking about wild flowers and in 28 we were talking about grass of the field. These two particular items were brought up as examples of organisms that have needs. These needs are wholly filled by God. The point was that we are vastly more important, therefore we can lay down our worry and let God handle the obvious.

This is good news. If we seek hard after God’s kingdom, we will be provided what we need. These things that tend to make us anxious can be an afterthought, so that we can continue seeking God’s kingdom.

If you go to Luke 12:34 you see this.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Luke 12:34 (NIV)

Your treasure should not be in the kitchen, or at a restaurant, or at a bar, or any number of other places. Your treasure should be God. Seek after God and treasure the experience and the opportunity.

If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.

1 John 4:15 NIV

This verse is key. Know and acknowledge Jesus is the Son of God. If you do that, God lives in you. Think about that. God, who created the universe and everything in it, will live in you. He will live in you through his Holy Spirit.

How awesome is that? Stop. Think about it. Let it sink in for a few minutes. God wil live in you. You will live in and through God.

Know that Jesus is the Son of God.

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

Habakkuk 2:14 NIV

This is a good one. At first glance I thought the scripture pointed to Jonah and the great flood. The issue I had there is that it just didn’t sound right, so I dug in to the surrounding scripture. I needed the context.

What I have arrived at, is that the knowledge of the glory of the Lord will fill the earth. The knowledge itself will fill the earth. It will fill the earth like the waters cover the sea.

Once judgement comes from the Lord, its source will be obvious. Once Jesus returns to the earth it will be obvious. Knowledge of the Lord’s glory will fill the earth.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8 NIV

I love this verse. This is such an important verse to believers, because we know that God is unchanging. Jesus has been with us from the beginning, he is with us now, and he will be here at the end.

Take comfort fellow believers, because Jesus is with us always and forever.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32 NIV

It is probably no surprise that this verse was chosen for Election Day in the United States. Election Day, or not, we all need to be kind and compassionate to one another. It is the Golden Rule after all.

We head out to the polls and we each have our own opinions. We vote how we vote, then we move on down the road. No matter what tomorrow brings, we always have God at the head of our hearts, country, family, and lives. If we do that, then we are fine.

Thankfully God has forgiven us. I believe America has much to forgive. We, as a country, make mistakes every day. This is no different for each of us individually. Jesus has died and risen, so that we do not have to bear this sin. God forgave us through Jesus.

Whether it is Election Day, or any other day of the year, we are to be kind and compassionate to one another. The second piece here is to forgive each other. When mistakes are made, forgive each other. When we wrong someone, or when we are wronged, forgive each other. Why? Because “in Christ God forgave you.” This is enough.

Dear God, I pray you will forgive Americans and our sins. I pray you will forgive our country. Let us look to you and know your will. Let us put you first. Let us understand truth. Give us wisdom, mercy, grace, and blessing. Amen.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2 NIV

This scripture is hard to implement in our lives, but it should be one of our bigger prayers. We should not want to conform to the world. The world’s ways are wicked and pull us from the righteous path.

Transforming and renewing our mind helps us to know God. It is the way. Paul goes on to say that when we have a renewed mind, we have a way to test and know God’s will. Read God’s word, know God’s will.

The end of this verse is a good reminder that God’s will is good, pleasing, and perfect. It is absolutely perfect. Know God’s will. Be in God’s will. Find him in everything and do what he commands. Stay in God’s will.

I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13 NIV

This passage has become quite popular lately, with Steph Curry putting it on his line of clothing. It is a great verse to highlight, because it holds a key to this life and the one to come.

God has provided us a way and that way is Jesus. We can do all things through Jesus. If we are in God’s will, then we will know that if we ask, seek, and knock we will have the thing for which we seek. Why do we know that? Because we are seeking something in God’s will.

We can do all things. God asks us to do his will. We are asked to love him, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to live righteously in this world. Can we do it? We can do all things through him who gives me strength.

Do not be afraid. Get out into the world and do God’s will. Seek God’s will. Represent Jesus in the world and you will be given strength to do it.

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalms 27:1 NIV

The Bible speaks about fear over and over again. We are told to fear not. Here in Psalms we are asked “whom shall I fear?”

The interesting thing is that I have been pummeled with these scriptures about fear this week. They are on my phone, on the radio broadcasts, on my flip calendar, and in my personal scripture reading. Why is that? I think it’s a message. 😁

I don’t know about you, but I am afraid of something every day and quite frequently during the day. It is not the fear we associate with gory movies or the fear that comes from fright or from being startled. The fear I speak of is the fear of failure, of being accepted, of making a mistake, of irreparable damage, or of disappointment. This is the fear that holds me back and likely hold you back too.
